Uh oh, accident
Well, today I was in my first car accident in 23 years. I'd rather not do it again, thanks.
I suppose they tell you to stay off the roads when it's raining for a reason. Yeah, people in LA don't know how to drive in the rain!!. I was driving down Melrose, having just left the Paramount lot. Red light, so I stop. Guy behind me? Doesn't so much. I was talking to Caitlin on the phone, and all I could think was Shit, he's going to hit me. And he did.
And you know the most fabulous thing ever? He doesn't have insurance. Fan-frickin'-tastic.
My head hurts, and I can still (seven hours later) feel where I hit the headrest. He couldn't have been going that fast, because he didn't shove me into the car in front of me (thank the lord... that would have been an entirely different can of worms). And my bumper didn't crack, my tail lights didn't break.
So I spent the afternoon of my day off driving all over the Valley getting estimates. I got two. Both were around the $2,000 - $2,500 range. Fab-u-lous. They both say the frame has been damaged, possibly shifted to one side, and it's going to take a disassembly to fix it. Lovely. The guy said he'd pay, as he doesn't have insurance and, obviously, that driving-without-insurance ticket would cost him more. But he was thinking it wouldn't be more than $1,000. Wait until I tell him what the estimates came out, and that he's going to need to pay for my rental car for the "five to eight business days" it's going to take.
But see, I was told that if I get a ticket, my premiums double. What happens to my premiums if I get hit by an uninsured motorist? It's not in any way my fault, but it'll still utilize my insurance. So I'm tempted to not bring them into it if I don't have to, but he's going to have to pay for it. All of it. Including the rental car.
Ugh. This sucks. This sucks a lot. I didn't need this. *pulls hair out* If he's not willing to pay the total amount, I'm filing a police report tomorrow.
I want my mom and dad.

Hi Kater - I'm so sorry about the accident. My friend was hit by an uninsured motorist and he offered to have his friend fix it because he didn't have the money. Needless to say, it was never fixed :-( But anyway, at least this guy will pay. And if he doesn't, maybe you can have your mom ask about it with her agent before you go to yours....

Hey Kate, I'm sorry about your accident! I just wanted to tell you, that I told Craig about it and he said it seems impossible for your frame to have shifted without damaging the bumper. He said it takes a lot to shift the frame. And if I remember correctly... the bumper will stay intact in a collision up to 1- or 15 mph, but I suppose it varies with the car. But... keep that in mind before you go ahead with the repairs.
Good Luck!
Jamie
