The vanilla iced coffee is pretty tasty, actually, and did wake me up.

I feel like a kid again when the car gets to this point. And boy did my car need a bath! With being out of town two weekends ago and rain last weekend, it had been far too long. I even vacuumed my floor mats at home afterward, so my car is all nice and clean. :)

Thursday, 5/29/08: File, Recycle, Shred

This is why I need to break my habit of putting mail aside to look at later. "Later" stretches into several months, and ends with three bags FULL of said mail: one bag of things to keep and file away, one to recycle as is, and one to shred. This was quite the job today, but I feel accomplished. I still have a bit more to sort though, but I made a lot of headway.

Wednesday, 5/28/08: Let them eat cake

This is why I went to work Wednesday (which was, otherwise, a crazy and stressful day). Jenelle's birthday isn't actually until Friday, but she has a few days off so we celebrated early. Birthdays are kind of my job; I'm in charge of getting the gift, balloons, cake, and card from the whole staff. This time, they didn't have ANY regular cakes at my usual bakery, so I had to go with an ice cream cake. It was yummy!

Um, please excuse my GIANT SCHNOZ. And also the as-yet-to-be-unpacked suitcase from last weekend and the disaster of a bookcase behind us. *is embarrassed*

Not only did the guy double-bag almost everything I bought, but there was a whole stack of brand new, never been used bags inside one of my bags! Jeez. Gen and I are very good about reusing grocery bags for garbage can liners and cat litter disposal and recycling the rest, but I can see why there's a push for the cloth kind. We should get some ourselves.

I feel that this has been a very worthwhile weekend. I have been super-productive! I cleaned, I grocery shopped, I ran necessary errands, I condo hunted, I went hiking, I read an entire book and started another, I spent a lot of time hanging out with friends, I went to see a movie... WELL SPENT, I say.

Sunday, 5/25/08: View from the top

I had a very productive Sunday! I got up early to clean (the kitchen and bathroom sparkle!), and then went for a hike with Caitlin and Sean. We went to a new-to-me trail, up from Reseda Blvd. It threatened rain for a while, but ended up gorgeous and cool and perfect for hiking four miles up into the hills. From this spot, the Valley is so far away that everything is quiet and peaceful. There were little butterflies everywhere, and very few other people. Lovely!

Of course, I'm feeling the hike now. *g*

In the afternoon/evening, there was a bit of shopping and then Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, which I found stressful (in the way that adventure movies are) and entertaining.

Monet typically only likes toys that move, such as things dangling from strings that the humans have to bop around and play with her. Cymbeline likes toys that she moves herself, like this mouse, or the nondescript ball of fluff that looks enough like a hamster or other small, furry animal at a distance that it's freaked me out more than once.

This was actually a fitting photo for the weekend, as Grandpa Phil drove a Coca Cola truck for a living. Our family is definitely a Coke family. I'm not sure a can of Pepsi has seen its way into our refrigerator, even.

As kids, our only drink options with dinner were water or milk (out of which I always chose water). But every night, my sister and I would ask Dad for a taste of his Coke. And every night, we'd get just one sip. Over the years, I got so that I preferred the taste of Diet Coke to regular, and it has now become the only pop I drink. Oh, sweet nectar of life. *g*

Wednesday, 5/14/08: Got 'em all cut.

I had a very random evening. As I was in my car about to leave work, a man knocked on my window to tell me his wife had attended the University of Illinois (having seen my license plate holder), but that she'd graduated "several years" before I had. Then, walking in to the salon, a woman told me she really liked my shirt, and that it was quite flattering on me. Then, as I was pumping gas, the man on the other side of the pump came over and asked me about my car, and struck up a whole conversation on what I liked best about it, as he was thinking of buying one. I mean. Who knew people in Los Angeles were so friendly all of a sudden?!

I got my hair cut. I'm still a little undecided about it, because it's short. Really, really short. You should see the tiny, poky stub of a ponytail I attempted! It fell out after about two seconds. And I'm not sure I'll be able to style it as well as Yohana did. But I do like what she did! So we'll see.

Final Project

My final project is due for class tomorrow. I'm not taking classes this summer; even though it's only one night a week, those sixteen-hour days are killers. I have enough going on this summer that a break will be welcome. Anyway, in case anyone's interested:

The assignment was two self-portraits; one that had to use a picture of ourselves, and one that couldn't. I kind of like how they both turned out, and I'm really interested to see what other people do.

So the first one, with me in it, is supposed to be me painting myself into the picture. Or something. I used a bazillion Photoshop art filters and a bit of that Pissarro picture I posted earlier. I ran into a lot of challenges, and I kind of like how it turned out.

The second one took a lot of time to come up with the idea (a self-portrait without me in it?!?), and a lot of time to set up, but there wasn't a lot to do in Photoshop aside from splice everything together and align it all. I almost feel like that's cheating in a Photoshop class, but I remind myself that it's cross-referenced with Photography, and was more an exercise in creative thinking than anything. Each box is supposed to represent something about me, and I sort of like the overall effect. I'm SUPER excited to see everyone else's take on this half of the assignment!

I think drive-through Starbucks are the best idea ever. The fact that there's one just down the street from my office could be a dangerous thing! I limit myself to only stopping there on Saturdays I'm working. I figure it's my treat for spending my Saturday at work. Also, traffic's a breeze on Saturday and I always, always can leave 15 minutes later than usual and arrive early enough to drive through for coffee, and still be the first one to the office. Life is good.

After work, S and I drove around looking at condos. This is apparently not the best weekend for that, since we didn't find any open houses (where there are usually several around on weekends). We were looking at some neighborhoods that are a bit too rich for my wallet (what's that saying? Champagne taste on a beer budget?), but may work for her. I did see a couple possibilities that I might want to look into further. This feels crazy and grown-up. YIKES!

There's a giant gift card section and a really nice card and party section, not to mention the fact that they occasionally do buy-two-get-three-free sales on pop. All of our office party needs are met in one quick stop. *g*

This particular picture was for my teller supervisor's last day, as I stopped to get his Good Luck cake and We'll Miss You card.

Wednesday, 5/7/08: Organized Chaos

Wednesday was my day off--potentially my last weekday off in the next several months--so I wanted to make it productive. I cleaned, uploaded a bunch of stuff to iTunes, went to lunch at Porto's with Gen, saw Iron Man in the Arctic (OMG it was painfully cold in the movie theatre! I almost tight-rolled my jeans because my ankles were freezing!), ran several errands, went grocery shopping, AND finished watching the first season of Heroes. I'll count it successful.

I live in Los Angeles, where there is minimal public transportation and even fewer people out walking. Everyone commutes in their own little automobile-bubbles. I could not survive without my car. Evidence: it already has 12,000 miles and it's just seven months old. INSANE! It does good, though. I got my very first oil change (contrary to my belief that oil should be changed every 3 months/3,000 miles, my car now tells me when it's time) on Monday. The car, it takes good care of me. I think I'll keep it! *g*

We finally managed to get the landlord out here with an AC repairman to check on it, and it looks like it needs to be replaced. Yay! Maybe the new one will be programmable? Sunday, 4/27/08: Aaaaaand... vanish!

Half of my final project for class is supposed to be a self portrait without me in it. I was putting all my favorite things in boxes in my shelving unit, and I was trying (without success) to get a cat to stay in one box long enough for the picture to be taken. I have about a half-dozen shots similar to this one, in various stages of escape. Hee.
